Negative and toxic energies gain access to a home on any day at any time; energies can be brought, and sometimes you can unknowingly welcome these energies into your home. Everyone has bad days, no doubt, but if days are consistently bad and negative events keep unfolding, some sort of negative energy may be at play. If you’re like me, energies cling to me whether I want them to or not, so in turn, I go into protection mode to banish the risks of bringing any unwanted negative energies and entities into my home.
A lot of the time, when people think of negative energies, they think of demonic, paranormal, or even a curse. Not all negative energies have any demonic ties, although that is something that is possible. For example, the emotion of anger can turn your subtle energy into a fiery mess, and that energy can affect you and anyone around you. Bringing that particular energy into your home will linger like stagnant air on a hot day, and no one wants that!
Protecting your home from unwanted and negative energies brings you the power to be able to keep a safe, happy, and humble home life. Living the life you were granted deserves a safe and sacred space that maintains high vibrations and raises the bar to meet your highest potential.
Before you begin, ground yourself by meditation and/or cleanse your entire being by smudging. This will bring balance and harmony to your spirit so you can get into the zone of charming your home.
Preparations Before Protecting
Before I take any action steps to protect my home, I begin from the inside first, opening all the windows to release all stagnant energy that has nestled in my home. I personally enjoy doing this on a windy day because I can feel the wind enter, carry out the energy, and introduce a fresh and clean environment to begin preparation. This feels like a strong field of energy from the universe and the earth pushing out energies with brute force. Below are a few tips to prepare before actively protecting your home:
- Smudging – Smudging is an excellent tool to cleanse your home from negative and unwanted energies and brings a clean slate and a sense of peace. When smudging your whole home, repeat smudging rituals in every room in all corners, afterward go back around and smudge all main corners of your home. If you would like more information on smudging, check out To Smudge or Not To Smudge
- Cleanse crystals – Crystals are typically found in particular places in the home which at the same time hoard and combat energies. Putting trust into your crystals to do their jobs requires cleansing rituals to strengthen the performance of the crystal. It is not required, but you can also charge them under a full moon so they will be cleansed and charged!
- Cleanse divination tools – If you do any type of divination, it is always a good idea to cleanse your divination tools before putting protection into place. Any old and stagnant energies may be attached to your tools, which may cause a disruption in energy flow in your home and can hinder future divination processes.
- Give your home a good clean – Just cleaning your home alone can lift spirits and bring good energy, but doing a good cleaning with intention and purpose can prepare your home to release old and negative energies and welcome new and warm energies in. Cleaning with certain herbs will also put a little pep into the step of welcoming certain energies into your home and keeping certain energies at bay.
Charms of Protection

Just like a protection charm you may carry on your person; your home can indeed have charms and certain elements to ward off any negative energies that may try to enter. The elements that may be used in your home don’t necessarily need to be bought, but you can make them instead. Personally, I try to bring in earthly elements to bring in a little strength from what the earth provides. Don’t steer away from purchasing something, though, if your soul likes it, get it! If purchased, be sure to cleanse the item before placing it in the chosen spot.
Below is a list of some protection elements you can add to your home:
- Lavender and Rosemary – Combined in a planter outside your doorways, lavender and rosemary make a wonderfully potent protective barrier. You may add pieces of selenite upon the soil at the base of the plant to enhance the capabilities of the plants. This is my most recent action of protecting my home, and I planted both rosemary and lavender in a pot on each side of my main doorway. Not only rosemary and lavender but also dill, parsley, oregano, comfrey, sage, basil, mugwort, and vervain help combat negativity.
- Sigils – A sigil is a symbol drawn, crafted, and/or placed typically above the doorways to ward off any ill intent trying to make room into your home. Symbols like the pentagram, Celtic shield knot, eye of Horus, hamsa hand, or any protection symbol of your preference.
- Bells – Bells hung above the doorway or popularly on your doorknob inside. The sound of the bells dispels negative energies and brings forth positivity to the surrounding space.
- Sachets – Sachets may be placed above a doorway or any sacred space that may need protection. The contents of the sachet can range in diversity of your choosing. Powerful correspondences include your cloth to be black. Adding protection herbs and plants, crystals, and oils. Popular items in a sachet include obsidian crystal chips, rosemary, mugwort, and bay leaves. If you wish you may include a handcrafted sigil.
- Salt – Black salt creates barriers for any unwanted negative energies or entities from entering your home. You may create a salt line outside your door and around your home externally. Keep in mind that it is inevitable for the salt line to be disturbed while traveling in and out of your home, or wind may carry it. That is okay! Your intention and actions create that barrier with the salt.
- A witch’s bottle – Any type of bottle of your preference can be filled with certain charms, sealed, and buried in front of your home. Typically, the contents are sharp objects like pieces of broken glass, nails, and pins. Historically, it is known to add urine, but this is not by any means necessary for home protection. A witch’s bottle buried or concealed near your home will together trap and banish negative energies or entities.
- Besom/Broom –Keep your besom bristles upright and away from your mundane brooms. You may keep it in a sacred space or next to your doorway in a corner. This will give you quick and easy access to your cleansing tool as needed for sweeping energies in or out.
- Crystals – Cleansed crystals may be placed by the main entrance and/or in high-traffic areas of your home. If you’re a crystal lover like I am, they are all over the home! Crystals for protection include: black obsidian, shungite, tiger’s eye, pyrite, labradorite, smoky quartz, and black tourmaline.
- Candles – Candles are a great measure of protection against evil energies using the elements of fire and air. Some keep a candle by the door, but you can also keep a candle in the main space of your home. You may light the candle right after protections are set in place or anytime of day to your preference. For protection purposes, you will need a black candle as they are known for absorbing and banishing any negative energies.
- Colors – Certain colors can be used all around your home pertaining to correspondences. Although the color black is the main go-to color when it comes to protection because of the banishing and blocking qualities, there are many other colors that you can use to dress your home to enhance the protection magic.
Incantations & Intentions

When putting out intention, the only thing you need to be sure of is that it comes from your heart and soul. Sometimes just saying it to say it can potentially minimize the potency your intention and incantation hold. If you are new to this, though, just know you may feel a little silly or awkward, and that’s okay! You still can put emotion and energy behind it, and will have the same effect. Practice makes perfect and once you have passed the awkward and silly stage, you’ll see how wonderful it truly is. Most times, there are incantations and spells that are already available to use through research, but also don’t hold back from scripting out your own verses. If you are unsure what to say, I have a few incantations and spells below:
- “Guard this home for which I roam and banish all energies that do this space harm. Protect those in and outand nothing but good shall sprout. So mote it be!”
- “Bring forth protection both day and night, with nothing but good intentions and bright light. May all destructive energies refuse to enter and return to sender”
You may recite these while you go through the motions of placing protective charms and boundaries.
When creating your own incantations and spells, make sure you put the time and effort in. Brainstorming perfect words and verses can get your own energies flowing, bringing you the power needed to rid any unwanted energies. Follow your heart and spirit for what is intended in your personal incantation. Write them down and keep them in your Book Of Shadows or Grimoire so you can go back to them when needed. If you feel that this wasn’t the spell or incantation for you, or you just feel it didn’t work, don’t be afraid to scrap it and start new. Sometimes I will keep spells and incantations even if I feel they were not sufficient enough for the task at hand. Holding on to these helps me craft different spells and gives me ideas on wording.
Maintaining A Protected Home
Just like your home itself, maintenance is required to keep good energies in and the bad out. Maintaining a home abundant with light and radiant energies will introduce a new sense of security for daily living, but keeping your protective boundaries and borders strong and resilient. Sensing any type of unwanted energy is a good indication to take the action steps to banish them before they become too strong and disrupt your daily life.
Once you feel that your home is perfectly protected and guarded, set a time aside where you can plan out your protection rituals. You may write it down in a planner or on a calendar and make a set day where you may do a full home protection ritual. Also, keep items on hand like a besom, incense, and candles to tackle any negative energies that may find their way into your home at any time.
On a side note, it is very important to keep your preferred protection items on hand if you are constantly out in public or you work in the public. Dispel any negative energies that may attach, linger, and follow you home once those energies are sensed as soon as you can.
